From silent films of the early 1920s to modern classics such as The Hangover, American comedies have transformed though out the years. American comedies became popular as a way of escape from reality in the 1920s. It was a way to bring out humor and laughter from the audience watching these films. American comedies would take serious social issues like racial and ethnic issues, immigrants, male and female relationships and differences in social and economic class and use these issues as their material for comedies. American comedies used their exaggeration of situations to amuse the audience. There are many different types of American comedies and they have changed dramatically though out the years. The silent film era was a massive part of the history of American comedies. Silent films took silent comedians and used their exaggerations of body language and humorous story lines and transformed them into stories to amuse the audience. The two most predominate actors in the silent film era were Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton. With the introduction of slapstick comedy, where use of physical comedy involving exaggerated, energetic actions, violence, and activities which may exceed the boundaries of common sense, actors such as Chapin and Keaton rose to the top of the entertainment industry. Movies like â€Å"The General† by Buster Keaton, allowed for a different element of comedy. Instead of Keaton always interacting with a human costar he would have relationships with machines, which lead to a more interactive experience because he would play off of the machine and it would engage the audience even more. â€Å"More often then not, Keaton’s comic costar was a machine†¦Keaton’s Relationships with machines often proved more harmonious than those with human costars†¦Ã¢â‚¬  described John Belton, author of American Cinema American Culture. Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton mastered the art of slapstick comedy by transforming it into a form of self-expression. One movie that brought back the nostalgia of silent movies was The Artist, which was a silent film that came out in 2011. The Artist took a modern approach on a silent film, which included some slapstick comedy, and you can clearly see the inspiration from Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton. When sound was introduced into movies there was quite a transformation. Screwball comedy grew as the sound in movies became more obtainable. Screwball comedies took the idea of slapstick comedies but incorporated verbal word play in it. Comedies such as â€Å"Some like it Hot†, with marilyn monroe, took the idea of using exaggerated body language and incorporated verbal word play so the audience could engaged in a deeper story line. In â€Å"Some like it Hot† by Billy Wilder, Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis dress up as women in a band to escape the mob who is looking for them. While they are dressed up as women they are constantly getting involved in crazy situations where they have to escape in minutes or they had to hide their real identity from Sugar, played by Marilyn Monroe. While they were involved in these scenes they had to use their body language as well as their witty verbal wordplay and by doing this the audience was able to connect to these characters. Movies like Role Models (2008) use the idea of screwball comedy there is an extreme amount of dialogue and verbal wit in movies like Role Models but when they incorporate the verbal wit with their â€Å"slapstick† comedy the result is a modern age screwball comedy that everyone enjoys. As American comedies progressed so did the sub-genres with films like slapstick comedies as well as screwball comedies it gave actors and writers to expand their talents. In the late 1930s and early 1940s romantic comedies played a big role in the expansion of American comedies. â€Å"Romantic comedies, in which the central dramatic action involved the comic (as opposed to melodramatic) vicissitudes of heterosexual love affair and that had been a staple of the silent screen, enjoyed a new lease on life in films that combined romance with the comedy of manners,† explained John Belton. Movies such as â€Å"Some like it Hot,† and â€Å"The Awful Truth† combined screwball comedy with romantic comedy. They would use elements of screwball comedy but would mix it with the drama of a romantic relationship. For example, in Leo McCareys’ â€Å"The Awful Truth†, Cary Grant and Irene Dunn play a married couple that is getting a divorce but as each person tries to move on to a new relationship the other person finds a way to mess things up. For example, when Lucy, played by Irene Dunn, starts dating a new man Cary Grants’ character finds humorous ways to mess up her new relationship. Romantic comedies sometimes incorporate screwball comedy into it to give the movie a more upbeat tone. The basic plot of a romantic comedy was that two protagonists, usually a man and a woman, meet, part ways due to an argument or other obstacle, then ultimately reunite. This basic plot is still used today in many movies. Movies like the Wedding Singer, Serendipity, and Never Been Kissed all use this basic plot. Overall, the development of American Comedy has progress tremendously throughout the years. From Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton’s slapstick comedy to Cary Grant and Irene Dunn’s romantic comedy there is always a form of comedy though out the years. With out Chaplin and Keaton there would not be such a vast history behind the idea of American Comedy. Even though these American Comedies touched on serious social issues, they brought humor to people who really needed it. One of the most important things about the classic American Comedies was the fact that it gave people an escape when they desperately needed it. Even though American comedy films have a long and important history the reason why comedies are so popular has not changed since film was invented. During a long, cold winter, it’s easy to collect clutter and feel unmotivated to finish the school year strong. While cleaning may sound like a drag, it doesn’t necessarily have to be! Open up the windows, blast some music, have a pint of ice cream waiting as a reward, and get your KonMari on. We’ve come up with a list of suggestions to help you chase away the winter blues and put a little spring back into your step. Find your textbooks a new home If you didn’t rent or borrow your textbooks, you may be left with a stack of them by the end of the school year. Unless you plan on using them in the future, you should consider letting them go. If you’ve purchased textbooks before, then you know that it can cost a small fortune. While it’s unlikely to get all of the money you spent on books back, there are opportunities to get a little something back in your pocket and ultimately get rid of the textbooks once and for all. Websites like Bookscouter, TextbookRush, and Campus Books offer to buy your used textbooks and usually handle shipping. If you realize that your textbooks are not worth much and you come to the point where you just want them out of your sight, you can always donate them to nonprofits or local libraries. It’s also worthwhile to check out any social-media pages related to your school or community that may possess an interest in collecting books at the end of the school year. Other students may be taking summer courses or already preparing for next year; don’t be afraid to reach out to fellow students to see if they want to buy textbooks from you. Whatever you do, don’t throw your books away or throw them into a bonfire. There’s no need to set books ablaze (no matter how horrible CHEM 203 was) when there a plenty of people and places who will happily adopt them. Above all, if you are sick of dealing with the textbook shuffle every year, try looking into ebooks for future classes. Sort your school supplies Flash back to the beginning of the school year when school shopping served as your retail therapy to the end of summer sadness. Approaching the end of the year, you realize you’ve barely touched these things and are left with a pile of unused office supplies that have become way too comfortable in your junk drawers. If you know that you will never use that three-hole-punch ever again, pass it along to someone who will. Ask your roommates, classmates, or teachers if they need or want anything. Recycle old paperwork Don’t be a hoarder. If you know that you will never read or need old papers ever again- just toss them. Theres no use of holding on to things for nostalgia’s sake. In reality, they are just contributing to the clutter. Ask around if anyone you know may want your materials for their own use, like if theyre going to take that class (no cheating, though!). However, if your notes are illegible and sloppy, it may be best to just feed them to the recycling bin. You could also check out the arts department to see if they need any scrap paper for random projects. Who knows? You may just stumble across a student looking for scrap paper to use in an end-of-the-year project. Clean up your space Now may be a good time to ask yourself, When was the last time I thoroughly cleaned my room? I’m talking about a solid vacuum and dusting session.  If you’re prone to allergies or asthma attacks when spring rolls around, don’t assume pollen is the only culprit. Pet dander and dust are powerful triggers for asthma and can negatively affect your longterm  health if you don’t take the right precautions. Cleaning your physical space will also help cleanse your headspace as well. Organizing your space grants you more room to breathe and encourages productivity. Take the time to place things in storage rather than just throwing them in the back of your closet. Taking that extra step to make your space functional will ultimately save you time and energy in the long run. Clean out your closet We all have that one piece of clothing we’ve been holding on to forever- you’re convinced you’ll wear it next season this time, or The Great Gatsby-themed brunch thatll totally, definitely happen (no and no). If this sounds familiar, its time to just let it all go.  If your clothes are in good condition, there may be a chance to sell them for some cash. Stores like Plato’s Closet and Buffalo Exchange will often buy back clothes and give you cash or store credit depending on what they accept. However, it is important to note that just like textbooks, you probably won’t get back the money you initially spent on the item- because that’s just the way the Gatsby-scone crumbles. You always have the option to donate clothes to Goodwill or a local help center. Again, search for opportunities around campus for end-of-the-year clothing drives or student-run flea markets or fundraisers that could present an easy drop-off opportunity for your items. If all else fails, ask your friends if they want to dig through your giveaway pile before dropping it in a local donation box. Share your food Perhaps you had a Martha Stewart moment and bought an ambitious amount of canned goods to try a new recipe, but never found time to actually execute it. Now, you’re left with an array of untouched food crowding your shelves or slowly expiring in your freezer. Getting rid of old food is vital for a successful clean-up. First, determine what food has expired and trash it. If you have an abundance of nonperishable food items, look for public drop-off locations where you can take your goods. Food banks are an ideal resource because they collect and store foods that are then distributed to local food pantries, charities, and meal programs. You can find a local warehouse at Feeding Americas website, which includes a directory of food-bank networks. Check out local churches, schools, and shelters that may be conducting food drives that would happily welcome your donations. If you realize that you have a bunch of food that is perishable and is about to go to waste, consider hosting a potluck for your friends or roommates. They probably need to get rid of their food just as much as you do and voil, you’re on your way to a fun, social gathering. Cleanse your mind and spirit While we’ve been emphasizing physical cleaning efforts, it’s also important to note that spring cleaning should be extended to the mind, body, and spirit. We are essentially caterpillars turning into butterflies waking up from a long winter’s nap. The winter months can be a trying time and the transition into spring calls for some self-care and reflection. Find some quiet time to meditate, journal, or just check-in with yourself to determine how you feel and what you would like to accomplish this season. Consider taking some time to treat yourself to a new haircut or a new book. With warmer weather and longer days, spring is a great time to adopt some new hobbies or interests. The goal is to purge yourself of the emotional and physical plagues you may be carrying from the winter and embrace the optimism of a new chapter. With exams right around the corner, spring cleaning is a great way to get organized and create a productive space before finals week. If it all feels too overwhelming, try starting with some smaller tasks and tackle the bigger projects once you feel motivated. Picture this, a man is called from his lunch trip to McDonalds to drop what he is doing and report a triple homicide. The man drops what he is doing, gets in his car, and goes to the scene. He interviews everyone from witnesses to cops. After he gets all of his information, he goes back to the news station to prepare and edit his story to be viewed on the 6oclock news. After a long day of reporting and editing the reporter finally gets to go home and sleep. Being a reporter seems like a really fun and exciting job because you get to do a variety of things from interviewing big names but being a reporter can also be very dangerous as well. I personally would love to be a reporter and get to experience what it would be like to be in on the action. Reporting can be a very fun and awesome job, but it can also be very scary and dangerous. One of the many things reporters get to do is interview anyone from bystanders and witnesses to big celebrities. Many reporters get the chance to get interviews with celebrities. Some are just normal interview and some are exclusive and go deep into a certain topic. On February 13, 2011 at the Staples Center during the red carpet arrivals, Lady Gaga arrived in one of the most unique ways, in an egg. While on the red carpet one of Gagas representatives stated that she was in the womb and wasnt born until her performance (Seacrest). With all of the protests going on in Egypt its no surprise that reporters and journalists are traveling to Egypt to report the events going on, it would also be no surprise that some of the reporters would come back a little beat up too. On Wednesday, February 02, 2011, it was reported that Anderson Cooper and two other Associative Press reporters were beaten in Cairo when attempting to cover the recent protests. Cooper says he and his crew were attacked by supporters of President Hosni Mubarak on Wednesday. CNN later said no one was seriously hurt (Mirkinson). Even if reporters get to meet interesting cool new people they still risk their lives all for one reason, to get that one story. One main thing about being a reporter is that one must ALWAYS have a story. There many ways to find a story, for example one can look at other new stations and see what their rival reporters are talking about and tell their story as ones own. One could even analyze their story and give a different take on it (Albin). Another example would be the AP wires, somewhere out in the world, there is a reporter somewhere writing a story, and they share that story with other reporters, and that information ends up on the AP wire which one can use to generate new ideas (Albin). Reporters always need a story, even if they have to make one up on the spot. Being a reporter requires a lot of training and education. Many newspapers or new stations require at least a 2 year degree. According to USA Todays Human resources, a future reporter would need at least a 2 year degree in journalism (USA Today). According to eHow for some places of employment in the journalism industry depending on what kind of reporter someone wanted to would require a bachelors degree in journalism and whatever other topic for example if someone want to be a weather person or and science reporter, they would need a degree in that field to (Blake). Many newspapers and news stations require some experience in journalism before they consider hiring. According to USA Today they require a minimum of 5 years of experience before considering hiring a journalist (USA Today). According ABC in New York a successful candidate will have a medical degree, 3 years of on-air experience and the ability to compose their own stories in order to be a medical reporter (Plotnik). As i t is shown it is not easy to apply for a reporting job. It can take a lot of experience and education. The working conditions for reporters can be very hectic sometimes and their wages arent really a lot for what they do. For most reporters they have to deal with loads of stress. For most reporters their jobs are really hectic because they have to deal with the pressure of deadlines that could put their career in the line (Career Information). Sometimes reporters even air broadcasts where they have to improvise and make up words on the spot (Career Information). Wages in reporting and journalism are not really that high especially for what they have to do. According to USA Today Human Resources, a reporter would make about $33,000 per year before taxes. Thats about $12.00 an hour (USA Today)! For all of the stress, danger, and madness reporters go through When out reporting a story, attire mostly depends on ones surroundings. If they are meeting the president, a suit would be appropriate. If they are at a construction site, most likely a hard hat and some jeans would be more appropriate. A reporters environment is where ever they choose to go. If a journalist has a computer or a cell phone then they would go off and they write a story on the scene or maybe on the way back from the scene or at home or wherever and whenever then just file the story on line. Some stories like shootings, wars, car chases, etc. are essential to be reported live on the scene (Albin). When it comes to a reporters look it mostly depends on the environment of the story they are reporting. So as you can see the life and career of a reporter is really hectic and daring. Some stories are easy and flow through; some are going to be scary and a living nightmare that you dont think you going to wake up from. In my perspective I would like to be a reporter because it would seem like a fun and exciting job and opportunity. Even if the hours are hectic and the deadlines are what mostly make the job so stressful, just the whole aspect of being where the action is. Reporting is an awesome job because any story you have could be that one story that will make you go from a nobody to well known in the journalistic community. If I had to choose what kind of reporter I would be I think I would be an entertainment reporter because I like and find things of that nature very interesting. The only challenge about being a reporter is that if you have an idea for a story you need to do massive amounts of research. Another challenge about being a reporter is that if you are an entertainment reporter you would always have to be in the know about the hottest celebrities and topics. If your behind and talk about something that was popular three months ago, you will look silly because you were so slow to get the information and I will tarnish your reputation. The one thing I dont like about reporting is that you have to suck up to everyone and not contradict them or correct them. If you do, youre pretty much over. If I were a reporter, I would only get the hard facts and not make up any rumors or imply anything. It would be the truth and nothing but the truth. No lies, no false statements. For now I guess the only reporting I can do will be on random things on YouTube.

Appearance versus reality is an important theme in William Shakespeare’s Macbeth. The theme focuses on characters who are deceived by what appears to be real, and on the tragic consequences that follow this error in judgment. These characters include, Duncan, who trusts Macbeth too much; Lady Macbeth, who tricks by the witches and herself; Macbeth trickes by other people in the play.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  King Duncan trusts Macbeth too much. Actually Macbeth is not that faithful to the king, he has the ambition to be the king when he hears the prophecies from the three witches. After Macbeth back to his castle, he plans to kill Duncan with Lady Macbeth, but Duncan doesn’t recognize this and goes to Macbeth’s castle to visit him. When he just gets in he says something very important: Duncan says, “This castle hath a peasant seat; the air/ Nimbly and sweetly reconnends itself/ Unto our gentle senses.'; (Act I, Scene 6, Lines 1-3) This quote shows that Duncan like Macbeth very much even he feels that Macbeth’s place is comfortable for him. Funeral tomorrow (Camus 3). Because of this, one would assume that Meursault would be having racing thoughts of what the circumstances were surrounding Mamans death. This is not the case, though, as his first thoughts are how he will take the two oclock bus and get there in the afternoon. That way [he] can be there for the vigil and come back tomorrow night (Camus 3). The fact that his first worry is being aback home as soon as possible is a clear insight into his apathetic nature. Once Meursault gets to the funeral home and talks to the director, his apathy continues to show and it becomes apparent to readers that he was apathetic to his mother even while she was alive, as he says to the direction, I didnt go [to visit Maman] much this past year It took up my Sunday not to mention the trouble of getting to this bus, buying tickets, and spending two hours traveling (Camus 5). Then, as the director continues to talk to him, Meursault admits that he wasnt really listening anymore (Camus 5). Thereby, readers are able to see, through his relationship, or lack of relationship, with his mother, and his indifference towards her death, that Meursault is a fundamentally apathetic person. After returning home after Mamans vigil, Meursault decided to go for a swim [so he] caught a streetcar to go to the public beach (Camus 19). Then, while at the beach, Meursault ran into Marie Cardona whom [hed] had a thing for at the time (Camus 19). It appears as if he was focusing a lot of attention on her, as he notes small details about her, such as that her hair was in her eyes and she was laughing (Camus 20), that a random passerby would not have noticed. It starts to seem as if Meursault finally met someone who is able to bring some sort of emotion out of him. This can be inferred by Meursaults actions towards Marie, such as when he let [his] head fall back and rest on her stomach (Camus 20), and when he put [his] arm around her waist, and [they] swam together (Camus 20). After they spent the night together at his house, Meursault tried to find the salty smell Maries hair had left on the pillow (Camus 21). It is actions like that which leader readers to believe that Meursault is sincerely developing feelings for Marie, and that he will finally be able to learn how to openly express emotion. It turns out, however, that this is just not the case. As Meursaults relationship with Marie develops, readers start to see his apathy again, though Marie apparently doesnt. Marie came by to see me and ask me if I wanted to marry her (Camus 41), Meursault says. The fact that Marie proposed to Meursault can signify that she felt that they were ready to take their relationship to the next level, but had no indication from him that he was going to ask for her hand, so she had to take the initiative. Then, Meursaults answer, I said that it didnt make any difference to me and that we could if she wanted to (Camus 41), confirms this assumption. He goes on to say, I probably didnt love her (Camus 41). That signifies that Meursault actually did not have any intentions of marrying Marie, but rather was using her for his own pleasure. Their relationship, according to him, was little more than physical. Also, the fact Meursault had such a casual attitude towards marriage shows that he does not really care much about it. Thus, the first impression that readers get about Meursaults attitude towards Marie is wildly misleading, as it made readers start to believe that Meursault might actually have some type of emotions within him that he was able to express. In the end, however, Meursaults relationship with Marie is ultimately another example of how much of an apathetic person Meursault truly is. The most prominent example of how Meursaults relationships with others allow readers to see his sense of apathy, however, is his confrontation with the Arab. Meursault originally claimed that he was stepping towards the Arab in an attempt to get away from the gleaming sun, though he then says, I knew that it was stupid, that I wouldnt get the sun off me by stepping forward. But I took a step, one step, forward (Camus 59). It was only after seeing Meursault move towards him that the Arab drew him knife and held it up to [Meursault] (Camus 59). So, Meursault possibly knew that by taking that single step, he would be causing a problem between the Arab and himself. Nevertheless, he still did not care, and continued to take that step. It is then that Meursaults apathetic disposition becomes even more visible in his relationship with the Arab, when he shots the Arab, especially because he seems as if he is shooting the Arab not because of their previous problem, but rather because of his anger towards the heat. Meursault uses the analogy of a knife to describe the sun. In regards to the sun, he says It was like a long flashing blade cutting at my forehead that slashed at my eyelashes and stabbed at my stinging eyes (Camus 59). Though this was due to the fact that the Arab raised his knife in the first place because, after he rose it, the light shot off the steal (Camus 59) towards Meursault, it is not as if the Arab deliberately intended for that to happen, since he was just raising his knife in self defense. It was simply Meursaults apathy getting the best of him, so much in fact that, even after he shot the Arab once, he fired four more times at the motionless body (Camus 59). Relationships that most people would hold near and dear to their hearts, such as that with their mother, or with their significant other, seem to mean nothing to Meursault. Though Meursault does not have a personal relationship with the Arab, the idea of taking the life of another human being does not seem to faze Meursault, either. Therefore, it is these relationships that Meursault has with others throughout the novel that demonstrate Meursaults apathetic nature. They are essential aspects of the plotline of the story, as they allow for the whole theme of existentialism to be established, using Meursaults apathy as a prime illustration of this theme.
